Lou Mele


A Carbon County native, Lou earned top honors at Carbon High School for athletics, as a member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. During , Lou's senior year in 1951, teams won state championships in football and 1952 baseball. Mele, #7 was selected to the All-State Football team as a half-back, and to the All-State Baseball team as a shortstop. He was also selected All-State third team in basketball.
His outstanding performances continued at the University of Utah where he played football and baseball earning Skyline All-Conference Football team honors in 1953 and 1954, and an honorable mention in 1955's All-American team. He was selected to play in the North/South All-Star Shrine Game at Miami, Florida, and with the Skyline Conference All-Stars in the Salad Bowl at Phoenix, Arizona in 1956.

University of Utah baseball honors include All-Conference team selection three years in a row.

After graduation Mele was invited to play with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Pittsburg Steelers. The United States Air Force also called on Lou which he chose to served for two and one-half years.

Lou returned to a coaching career at Uintah and Carbon High Schools, and later entered the coal industry.
